From Colin Madhavan:
The 1st Russian Embassy Chess Open 2007 started out as a friendly match but ended up as a tournament. A group of strong ’senior’ Malaysian chess players agreed to play Chess with a few Russians on a quiet Sunday morning to celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and Malaysia.
So though the event is considered strong by most standards, we managed to organise a chess event with very little costs involved (no entry fees, no cash prizes). The players played for the love of Chess. For example, NM Tony Tay and Chan Mun Fye played some Chess after a very long absence, and they played well. And also, IM Jimmy Liew and NM Tony Tay shared a tournament spot by playing as a pair, the former playing 3 rounds and the latter 2. In fact, the others who attended the event include NM Ng Ek Leong, NM Mok Tze Meng, Tan Hong Ghee and Hamid Majid. Believe me, this is the kind of comradeship in Chess that we all look forward to.
Dato’ Tan’s presence was really the icing on the cake, as he not only attended the opening ceremony, but also generously gave away copies of his book to all who played in the event. It was a great day for Chess when a group of Chess friends sit down and play Chess!
Hooray to Chess!!
