THE date 07.07.07 was special for the junior chess teams from SM La Salle Klang and SM Methodist Girls School Klang as they emerged champions in the boys and girls categories at the inaugural Gambit Publications Star Open 2007 chess competition.

Organised by the chess club of Sekolah Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (STAR), the competition had prizes worth more than RM1,000 sponsored by Gambit Publications.

The competition attracted 52 participants from schools in Klang, Puncak Alam and Bukit Kemuning.

Champion SM La Salle Klang was followed by SM Puncak Alam and SM Bukit Kemuning in second and third spots respectively in the boys category.

In the girls category, SM Methodist Girls School Klang was followed by STAR and SM Convent Klang.

The best individual player in the boys category was SM La Salle Klang’s Tee Soon Poh while SM Methodist Girls School Klang’s Eling Ng won the honour in the girls category. They each received a copy of a chess book.

STAR chess club teacher adviser, P. Pandiyan said the school hoped to see continuous sponsorship of the annual tournament by Gambit Publications.

“We will also be setting up a mini-chess book library. We hope this facility will be beneficial to members of the club,” he added.
